It is an ex situ process for physically separating volatile and semi-volatile contaminants from soil, sediment and sludge by heating to high temperatures (usually between 170 to 550oC ) to volatilize organic contaminants. TD systems can volatilize selected contaminants and drive off water. Total oxidation or destruction of organics is achieved by subjecting the flue stream from the TD to an afterburning process.
